Sipapu Ski and Summer Resort (New Mexico) has been issued a mandatory evacuation order as the Calf Canyons/Hermit Peak wildfire rages near the resort.

Sipapu is following the Ready, Set, Go plan for evacuation. The resort announced 3 hours ago that they’ve been elevated to ‘Go’ status.

‘Go’ status means that danger to the area is current and imminent, and people should evacuate immediately.

More information about the history of the Hermit Peak and Calf Canyons fire provided by Inciweb:

“The Hermits Peak Fire started on April 6, 2022, when unexpected winds pushed spot fires outside the project area for the Las Dispensas prescribed fire on the Pecos/Las Vegas Ranger District of the Santa Fe National Forest. The Hermits Peak Fire is approximately 12 miles northwest of Las Vegas, NM at the base of Hermits Peak in the Pecos Wilderness. The Hermits Peak Fire is burning through mixed conifer in steep, rugged terrain that poses challenges for firefighter access.

The Calf Canyon fire began on the afternoon of April 19 in Gallinas Canyon along Highway 65. The cause is under investigation. The fire is burning primarily through mixed conifer and Ponderosa pine with a significant amount of dead and downed fuels in the understory.

The Calf Canyon Fire merged with the Hermits Peak Fire on April 22 after a significant wind event.

Two Southwest Area Incident Management Teams, led by Incident Commander Dave Bales, are working together to implement a full suppression strategy for the Hermits Peak and Calf Canyon Fires.”

The fires have burned approximately 288,968 Acres and are considered to be 27% contained according to Inciweb. Other ski resorts and communities in Taos county could be effected in the coming days and weeks as the fire rages on.

We are keeping all of those effected, and all of those fighting the blaze in our thoughts and prayers.
