Some criminal mastermind got pinched in Boulder after walking into a bike shop trying to sell a stolen bike with bolt cutter sticking out of his backpack. CBS Denver reports Boulder Police Chief Maris Herold is praising her officers and the public in helping solve the $80,000 bike theft case.
The three bikes were taken from a business on Wilderness Place in Boulder in late March. Two of the bikes were prototypes that included unique technology ($40,000 and $30,000). The $12,000 bike was recovered the day after it was stolen. Police say someone walked into a local bike shop with “bolt cutters sticking out of his backpack.”The shop owner called police, who later arrested the suspect.
Later, at an undisclosed time and place, police say a member of the public found the second prototype bike and called police.
“I am so proud of the great work done by everyone involved with these cases. I’d like to thank the community members who spotted these bikes, knew something didn’t look right and called us. I am also incredibly proud of the swift police work done by patrol and detectives to find these stolen items, connect them to several recent crimes.” –Chief Maris Herold

Expensive Bikes Recovered After Burglary; Leads to Other Investigations
BOULDER, Colo. – Thanks to good teamwork between the community and police, Boulder Police have recovered all three bikes stolen during a burglary last week.
Additionally, the investigation has led to the discovery of numerous other stolen items, to include other bikes, electronics and packages from vehicles. Detectives are still cataloging those items, and looking into multiple charges of burglary, vehicle trespassing, theft and more.
Sometime between 10 p.m. on Wednesday, March 30, and 8:15 am on Thursday, March 31, an unknown person(s) broke into a business in the 2800 block of Wilderness Place and stole three bicycles as well as unique bike prototype technology that was on two of the bikes. The two prototype bikes are valued at $40,000 and $30,000 each while the third bike is valued at $12,000.
The $12,000 bike was recovered when an individual walked into a local bike shop the day after the burglary with the bike and a pair of bolt cutters sticking out of his backpack. The bike shop owner called police who responded and arrested the male.
Further investigation led to the location of one of the prototype bikes and the additional found property mentioned above.
Separately, a community member spotted the second prototype bike in another part of the city this week and notified police.
