Have you heard of the New Hampshire Hike-Safe Card? It’s a voluntary card that helps hikers not have to be liable to rescue fees on the trails across the state unless it’s a case of carelessness. Only 7100 of them have been sold this year so far, but that may change after this remarkable story. WMUR reports that a Massachusetts hiker broke her leg on a hike on Middle Sugarloaf Mountain in Bethlehem, New Hampshire. She tried to move it, but she couldn’t put any weight on it. After using her cell phone to call for assistance, along with being helped by other hikers on the trail, she was stretchered off by fourteen to fifteen members of Pemi Valley search and rescue officials. While this usually would have invoked heavy health care costs, the woman’s Hike Safe card saved her big time from some of the nightmarish fees of America’s healthcare system.
