Aspen Skiing Co. was hit harder than anticipated from the pandemic, according to an article written by Scott Condon of The Aspen Times.

The company believed they would see a 20% decrease in skier visits this season, but Jeff Hanle (Skico’s VP of Communications) said that the resorts are “down more than that.”

Hanle attributes the dramatic decline to poor early-season snow conditions, absence of international tourists, and general travel fears associated with the pandemic.

Aspen Skiing Co. will not release official numbers on skier visits until after the season has concluded, but Hanle says the recent snow storms will not be enough to dig the company out of the hole this season.

I’m not surprised that destination resorts such as Aspen are the ones hurting the most this season. They rely on tourists both domestic and international to keep the lights on.

Meanwhile local ski areas across the Midwest and East Coast are having record-breaking years.

What a strange season this has been.
