“We researched vacation home data from more than 29,000 different census designated places across all 50 states and ranked the top three locations with the most vacation homes in every state.”
If you had to guess which three states had the highest percentage of vacation homes would you have put your money on New England? Turns out the top states are Maine 19%, Vermont 17% and New Hampshire 12%. If you thought of Florida you weren’t too far off coming in at No. 6 with 10%.
Now that we know the top states which ones do you think have the lowest percentage of vacation homes? If you guessed The Midwest you’d be correct. Illinois ranks dead last with just 1% of its homes categorized as vacation homes. Other Midwestern states like Ohio (1.1%), Iowa (1.6%), Indiana (1.7%) and Kansas (1.4%) rounded out the bottom of the list.
Thanks to IPX1031 for conducting the study. They gathered home data from more than 29,000 different census designated places across all 50 states and analyzed the overall percent of vacation homes in every state.
Methodology
We researched vacation home data from more than 29,000 different census designated places across all 50 states and ranked the top three locations with the most vacation homes in every state. The Census Bureau defines vacation homes as housing units that are “vacant for seasonal, recreational, or occasional use.” To determine the percent of vacation homes in each location, we calculated the percent of all housing units that were classified as “vacant for seasonal, recreational, or occasional use.”images from ipx1031.com
