The United States will be hit by a massive heatwave over the next few days. The heatwave comes at the hottest time of the year which could lead to record-setting temperatures from the Rockies to the Eastern Seaboard.

Hot and humid air has already started to make its way up from the south. The event should peak on Friday and Saturday making for one hot weekend.

Nearly half of the US population will see temperatures at or above 95 degrees, according to meteorologists.

The cause of the oppressive heat event is a bump in the jet stream due to an area of high pressure over the eastern two thirds of the country.

Stay cool out there.
