A backcountry skier has been caught and killed by an avalanche this morning near the Markley Hut just outside of Aspen, CO.

According to the Colorado Avalanche Information Center, the slide buried the victim and although his partners were able to extract him, he was unresponsive. Attempts to revive the individual proved unsuccessful.

Accident Summary [CAIC]:

Preliminary Report: A group of backcountry tourers staying at the Markley Hut near the town of Ashcroft were involved in an avalanche on January 21, 2019. One was buried in the avalanche. The group located and extricated the tourer from the snow and tried to revive them, but their effort was unsuccessful.
