Sunday River will be Maine’s first ski area to open this season and the second in the northeast after Killington announced it would be opening on the same day yesterday.

The perennial early season favorite will host skiing on the upper half of Locke Mountain via the T2 trail. Visitors must download at the end of their day. The resort credited upgrades to the snowmaking system as the reason for the especially early opening.

Opening Day! | Any year we’re skiing while the Red Sox are still playing is a good year

Thanks to the work of the Sunday River snowmaking team, we’re planning to open for the 2018-19 winter season tomorrow morning, Friday, October 19 at 10AM.

This early opening is thanks in part to an increase in snowmaking capacity resulting from a major project completed over the summer to replace the resort’s snowmaking pipeline from our water source at the Sunday River to the snowmaking pumphouse at Barker Mountain. The new pipeline combined with an additional pump at the river create an immediate 15% increase in snowmaking capacity and lay the foundation to eventually double the resort’s snowmaking in the future.

On Friday, expect skiing on the T2 trail on upper Locke Mountain with lift service from the mid-station of the Locke Mountain triple and downloading back to the base at the end of the day. Snow conditions will be ungroomed new snowmaking and terrain is recommended for advanced abilities only.

Season pass pickup will be at South Ridge Lodge, with Barker Lodge open for skiers services including food and ticket sales. Lift tickets will be $30 for all ages.

Weather permitting we will remain open through Sunday and begin our standard early-season schedule of offering lift service on weekends only. Stay tuned here for updates.

Looking ahead, make sure to always buy lift tickets online and keep tabs on the Special Deals page for the latest offers and ways to save.

See you out there!
