Much the chagrin of the Unofficial Networks’ audience, Lift 1 @Loveland Ski Area will not be renamed “Lifty McLiftface.” The new high speed quad that will replace the workhorse triple will be titled, “Chet’s Dream” after one of the ski area’s founding fathers– Chester R. Upham, Jr. (May 19, 1925 – January 24, 2008).
Chet was was pivotal in the decision to add a chairlift (Lift 1) to the previously, rope-tow only ski area. With Lift 1 built, Loveland was cemented among the top tier of ski resorts in the country in the 60’s.
“If we’d got a dime, we’d spend it on improvements up there [at Loveland].” – Chester R. Upham
The name suggestion was submitted by ski patroller, Terry Henningson and approved by Loveland Ski Area’s board of directors. When asked why he suggested a a memorial to Chet, Mr Henningson told Loveland, “because he was so passionate and played such a big role in developing Loveland into what it is today.”
