Although limited in North America (*exceptions include Telluride, Jackson Hole, and Kicking Horse), Via Ferrata is extremely popular throughout Europe. Switzerland is home to some of the bigger climbs and one of the biggest in the world is the Leukerbad. The route rises some 3,600 feet from its mid-mountain starting point. The combination of established ladders and footholds makes it a must for anybody whose looking to do big mountain climbing without having to establish gear the whole way.
