A 25-year old man has died after falling head first into deep snow in the French Alps on Wednesday.

It appears that the snowboarder fell while riding off trail in the French resort of Meribel. He was found by two skiers who happened to be passing by and saw a snowboard sticking out of the snow.

A Mountain Rescue spokesman said the man was, “buried up to his pelvis and the snow was very heavy, very compacted,” the spokesman added that he could have been buried for up to half an hour before being found.

“The man died asphyxiated, unable to escape, after falling head first in the snow. Rescuers attempted resuscitation but to no avail,” said local media.

The man’s identity has not been released.

An investigation has been launched.

Last month, a snowboarder at China Peak ski resort in California passed away following a facefirst Into Deep Snow.
