A 32 year-old backcountry skier on died Tuesday after getting caught in an avalanche while ascending Red Mountain off Snoqualmie Pass reports The Seattle Times.

The man was discovered above the snow’s surface with crampons on his feet and skis strapped to his backpack. Preliminary reports indicate that the victim hit trees on his way down and likely died from bodily trauma, not suffocation. The victim was known in the area as a proficient skier and backcountry guide who was no stranger to traveling through avalanche terrain.
The danger on Tuesday was marked as moderate by the Northwest Avalanche Center. This death marks the 12 avalanche-related fatality this season.
