Being a writer for a website predominantly populated by skiers, I am hesitant posting a skateboarding video. But this is what I would consider amazing. Not only because this video features an amazingly talented skater, but also because the style and atmosphere created by the cinematography puts you into the shoes of the rider creating a video which is truly a testament to street skateboarding.
When Scottish skateboarder and film maker Colin Kennedy set out to make the short skateboard video “QUIK” he wanted to capture the neighbourhoods and lifestyles of that which he is acustomed to living in LA. The video is clearly captured through a watchful eye; noticing different ways people walk, different games they play and the ways people interact with each other plays into how street skating is with these places or at least how Kennedy and many others feels it should be.
A fast paced filming style paired with the speedy and creative skating of Austyn Gillette creates an atmosphere that is rarely created among action sports videos. One could pair the feel of this short with the urban/street segment featuring JP Auclair in Sherpas Cinema’s All.I.Can but again completely different as this has more of a presence of real life within the chaos. Shot out of the back of a van gives the viewer the track motion so you feel like your along for the ride; a style that is not rare, but rarely done well.
Just sit back and enjoy because segments like this don’t come around often enough.
