An Abkhazian Islamic militant plot to attack the 2014 Sochi Winter Olympic games was stopped this week according Russian authorities. Sochi is considered part of the Abkhazian historical homeland. These guys were caught with missiles, flame-throwers, grenades, guns, explosives, and mines. There plan: to kill as many Olympic spectators as possible.
“Russia’s National Anti-Terrorism Committee (NAC) said the special services had confiscated arms, ammunition and explosives – including surface-to-air missiles and a flamethrower – in the breakaway Abkhazia region of Georgia, the South Caucasus country with which Russia went to war in 2008.” – chicago tribune
“NAC said the weapons included Igla and Strela portable surface-to-air missiles, two anti-tank guided missiles and 36 mortar bombs as well as a flame thrower, grenade launchers, explosive devices, and anti-tank and anti-personnel mines.” – chicago tribune
“Russia’s FSB (security service) was able to establish that the fighters planned to move the weapons to Sochi from 2012 to 2014 and use them to carry out terrorist acts before and during the Olympic Games.” – Russia’s Anti-Terrorism Committee.
Just stop and think how many Olympic spectators they could have killed with this type of arsenal. A lot…a lot.
Abkhazia is a disputed nation within the post-Soviet nation of Georgia, is right next to Sochi, Russia, and has had a violent recent history full of ethnic cleansing. Georgia does not recognize Abkahzia’s independence and is fighting to Abkhazia part of Georgia.
Abkhazians are pissed off and about a block and a half from Sochi, Russia. (Check out the map below to see how close Sochi is to Abkhazia.) The Sochi Olympics would be a great venue to show the world that they mean business…
These Georgians and Abkhazians are not people you wanna mess with. They’ve been going thru ethnic cleansing, nasty Soviet warfare, and the overall Georgian-Abkazian Conflict that is purely an ethnic conflict. This is the ancient history/biblical type of hatred and warfare that generally never ever gets resolved (see: Israel-Arab Conflict).

RUSSO-GEORGIAN WAR (2008 South Ossetia War)
– Georgia is so serious about keeping Abkhazia (& Ossetia), that they were willing to fight the Russians head on for it.
