Red Bull’s Powder Disorder Freeski comp in Las Leñas, Argentina will the the first stop on the 2012 Freeskiing World Tour. Dates: August 9-12, 2011.
This Red Bull comp will be just like all other big mountain comps with one strong twist: There will be man-made kickers built all over the course. The judging will be skewed towards air and style in the air. Sounds awesome. It actually sounds like exactly what Freeskiing Comps need right now.
Red Bull will allow the top-placing competitors from the 2011 Freeskiing World Tour (list of these athletes below) to compete with their own invited athletes. The Red Bull Big-Dogs to come down could potentially be: Sean Petit, Henrik Windstedt, Grete Eliassen, and any other Red Bull skier.
It will definitely be interesting to see who shows up for this comp in Argentina this summer.
Las Leñas, Argentina.
“It’s fitting that we’re celebrating the start of the 2012 Subaru Freeskiing World Tour in the center of the Andes, where it began 15 years ago,” said Bryan Barlow, competition director for the Subaru Freeskiing World Tour. “Freeskiing has progressed so much since the tour began in 1998, and this progression will be evident when the world’s most talented freeskiers show up to compete on the biggest, most challenging venues in the southern hemisphere. Red Bull will be a great partner to help us kick off this season as they’re known for taking things to the next level.”
This comp will be a solid way to bring some more attention to the Freeskiing scene in South America. Most of the population in South America don’t have access to nor awareness around skiing, so we’re hoping this will be a big enough event (Red Bull is good at blowing stuff up) to get Freeskiing some love in the Southland.
“It’s really an honor for Valle de Las Lenas to host this international event for the third consecutive year,” said Federico Norkus, marketing manager at Las Lenas. “The first stop of the Subaru Freeskiing World Tour, the Red Bull Powder Disorder, will undoubtedly set a standard for this type of competition in South America. Snow is already falling over our mountain, and we are eager to welcome the athletes!”
