Roughly 2,000 wingsuit pilots have taken flight since the summer of 2015 and a recent spike in deaths is causing some locals to express serious worry about the future of the sport in the valley– namely, the mayor.

After a Russian wingsuiter collided with a chalet this week, the mayor is taking action by preventing the sport from taking place in Chamonix for six months reports The Local. The mayor hopes to take this time to properly mitigate such incidents from happening in the future.

“We can’t consider that flying over inhabited zones is something that’s normal, when they’re putting residents at risk” – Eric Fournier, Mayor Of Chamonix (*Quote courtesy of The Local)

Already this year, 35 people have died in wingsuiting accidents across the globe.
