Santa Fe, New Mexico — Since Mountain Capital Partners took over in 2023, they have tried to restore New Mexico’s oldest ski area to its former glory.
Before taking it over, Sandia Peak hadn’t operated for a couple of winters. Because of its proximity to Albuquerque, Mountain Capital Partners saw the ski area’s potential in a major market. This includes a focus on year-round activities.
KRQE caught up with Sandia Peak Ski Area officials this week about their plans for offseason activities. Sandia Peak is exploring ways to grow visitation from hikers and bikers. Volunteer crews cleared over 20 miles of trails this summer. Other ideas being floated around include a cafe up top and a wedding venue.
Meanwhile, work is underway on improving the ski experience. This includes refurbishing the buildings and attempting to reopen Chair 2 (the upper mountain lift) to the public. A museum is also being planned, which is intended to tell the story of the state’s oldest ski area.
Other Plans
According to the Cibola National Forest and National Grasslands website, Sandia Peak is considering several projects. These include adding a mountain coaster, replacing Lift 1 with a chondola, and other upgrades to the ski area’s infrastructure. Some have already been approved, while others are still under review.
