New Zealand's Mt. Hutt plans $12 million base area expansion.

Mt. Hutt Ski Area in New Zealand has announced a $12 million expansion of its base building area, with construction scheduled to take place over the summer and completion planned ahead of the 2027 ski season.

The project will significantly expand the resort’s outdoor sun deck while introducing several upgrades designed to improve facilities for skiers, snowboarders and staff. The investment comes as Mt. Hutt prepares for another winter season in the Southern Hemisphere.

Sun Deck to Nearly Triple in Size

The centerpiece of the expansion will be a major enlargement of Mt. Hutt’s outdoor sun deck. The area will grow from approximately 4,628 square feet to nearly 13,993 square feet, almost tripling its current size.

The expanded sun deck will also be fully heated, giving visitors more space to relax and enjoy the mountain environment during their time at the resort. The additional room should provide greater capacity for guests during busy days on the slopes.

Mt. Hutt’s base area serves as a central gathering point for visitors throughout the ski day, making improvements to its outdoor and indoor facilities an important part of the resort’s plans for the coming years.

New Facilities Planned for Winter 2027

The $12 million project will include several other improvements to the base building. Plans call for a new ground-floor toilet block, improved heated access steps leading down to snow level and an additional cafe outlet. The resort will also add storage space for both guests and staff.

These upgrades are intended to improve convenience and accessibility around the base area, while the additional cafe outlet will provide another option for visitors looking for food and drinks during their ski day.

The heated access steps will be particularly useful for guests moving between the base building and the snow, helping improve the transition between indoor facilities and the slopes.

Mt. Hutt says the expansion will take place over the upcoming summer, with the completed facilities expected to be ready before winter 2027. Visitors are encouraged to follow the Mt. Hutt website and social media channels for updates as construction progresses.
