One of skiing’s more unusual rivalries is about to add another chapter.
Park City, Utah, is preparing to celebrate the 10th anniversary of its annual Shot Ski this fall, and organizers have a very specific goal in mind: take the world record back from Breckenridge.
On Saturday, October 10, thousands of feet of connected skis will once again stretch down Park City’s Historic Main Street as participants simultaneously tip back shots of High West whiskey.
Organizers are aiming for 1,430 participants this year, which would be enough to surpass the current mark of 1,420 set by Breckenridge, Colorado.
The event is scheduled for 2 p.m. and is organized by the Park City Sunrise Rotary Club and presented by High West Distillery.
If Park City succeeds, it won’t be the first time the record has changed hands between the two famous ski towns.
In fact, the rivalry has become something of an annual tradition.
Park City’s Shot Ski was originally inspired by Breckenridge. According to event organizers, the idea was brought back to Utah after the event’s founders visited the Colorado ski town. The first two Park City events used Wasatch Brewery beer before High West Distillery joined the event and whiskey became the drink of choice.
Since then, Park City and Breckenridge have spent years trying to one-up each other.
Park City held the advantage in 2024 when 1,385 people participated in its enormous communal shot ski.
Two months later, during Breckenridge’s annual Ullr Fest, Colorado took the title with 1,401 participants.
Park City responded in October 2025.
A total of 1,410 adults lined Historic Main Street and simultaneously raised their glasses. The enormous contraption consisted of 528 skis connected end-to-end and stretched approximately 2,800 feet through downtown Park City.
That put Utah back on top.
But not for long.
By the end of the following winter, Breckenridge had once again edged ahead, increasing the record to 1,420 shots.
Now Park City wants it back.
The target for the 2026 event is 1,430 simultaneous shots, continuing a remarkably consistent pattern in which the two towns keep breaking each other’s records by relatively small margins.
While the record chase provides plenty of bragging rights, the event also serves as a fundraiser.
The Park City Sunrise Rotary Club says the Shot Ski raised $50,000 for its Community Grants program in 2025, helping support 39 local organizations. All proceeds from the event benefit charities in Utah’s Summit County.
The 2026 edition will mark 10 years of Park City hosting the event.
Individual tickets cost $30 and include a spot on the shot ski, a High West whiskey shot, and a commemorative 10th-anniversary shot glass. Participants must be at least 21 years old and present valid government identification.
A non-alcoholic beverage can be substituted for the whiskey, although participants must still be 21 or older.
The event also offers VIP and sponsorship packages that allow participants to take home custom event skis.
Check-in begins at noon, and participants are required to be in position by 1:30 p.m. Organizers warn that spots belonging to people who haven’t checked in by that time may be reassigned to ensure the record attempt has enough participants.
Then, at 2 p.m., Park City will find out whether the world’s longest shot ski title is headed back to Utah.
If the history between these two ski towns is any indication, Breckenridge probably won’t let Park City keep it for long.
