An 83 year old hiker who was reported missing on the North Rim of Grand Canyon National Park has been found alive following an extensive search effort.
According to the National Park Service, Gerald Guinn of Kanab, Utah, was located at approximately 6:30pm on July 22nd during a helicopter reconnaissance flight. Guinn was found about 2.5 miles from the location where he was last seen, bringing a successful end to a search that prompted a large response from park personnel and partner agencies.
Rescued By Search Teams
After being spotted from the air, rescue personnel reached Guinn and safely carried him in a litter to a nearby roadway. Emergency medical personnel evaluated him at the scene before he was transported for additional care. The National Park Service did not provide further details on Guinn’s condition or explain how he became separated from the trail.
The successful rescue came less than a day after park officials issued a public request for information regarding Guinn’s whereabouts. He had last been seen near the North Rim before search crews began combing the area by ground and air.
Multiple Agencies Assisted In The Search
Grand Canyon National Park thanked several partner organizations that helped bring the operation to a successful conclusion. The park specifically recognized both Coconino County Search and Rescue and Kane County Search and Rescue for their assistance throughout the mission. Their teams worked alongside National Park Service personnel during the search and rescue effort.
The quick location of Guinn highlights the importance of coordinated search operations in the rugged terrain of the Grand Canyon, where steep cliffs, remote canyons, and challenging conditions can complicate rescue efforts.
Park officials have not released additional information about the circumstances surrounding the incident. The successful rescue brings a positive outcome to what began as a concerning search for an elderly hiker in one of the nation’s most challenging wilderness environments.
