Roxbury, New York — One of New York’s more rugged skiing experiences is at Plattekill Mountain. Known as having some of the most challenging inbounds runs in the state, the family-owned New York ski area features a variety of steep terrain.
This offseason, Plattekill is working on improving the Sundown trail. These upgrades include widening the intermediate trail and upgrading the snowmaking infrastructure. In order to widen it, Plattekill had to bring the boom. As shared by Plattekill’s social media page, workers drilled and blasted the existing rocks to smithereens. Three booms!
Other investments include trail mowing, chopping wood for the lodge’s fireplace, and a redesign of the hydraulic tensioning system that’s part of the Sunshine Triple Chair. Some of the upgrades made for last winter include a new Bombardier Winchcat snow groomer, snowmaking enhancements on several trails, new siding and energy-efficient windows on the base lodge, installing a new staircase from the lower parking lot, a new ski patrol building, a new race room, and adding a backup generator in case the power goes out.
About Plattekill Mountain
Situated in the Catskill Mountains, Plattekill is one of the independent gems in the region. The ski area features 41 trails, 4 lifts, and a vertical drop of 1,100 feet. During the winter, the ski area allows companies or private parties to rent out the mountain on slower days of the week. There’s also a lift-served snow tubing park.
Summer is quieter, with the ski area being home to hiking trails and private events. It used to be home to a mountain biking park, but the owners decided to retire it in 2019.
