Southeast Ohio’s Hocking Hills region is getting a new attraction with the announcement of the Hocking Hills Mountain Coaster, the first mountain coaster in the entire state.
The new coaster, which has been in production for over a year, will feature 3,640 feet of track winding through the trees of the forested region with riders reaching speeds up to 26 miles per hour. The project will also include a nearly 5,000 square foot commercial building housing a gift shop along with merchandise and activities for the whole family.
Hocking Hills sits about an hour southeast of Columbus and is known for its sandstone cliffs, waterfalls, caves and extensive hiking trail system. It draws millions of visitors each year, particularly during the fall foliage season.
Developers behind the project say the coaster is meant to serve more than tourists visiting from around the country. They describe it as an addition built with the local community in mind as well, calling it a benefit for the entire region rather than just a draw for out of town visitors.
As the first attraction of its kind in Ohio, the coaster would give Hocking Hills another year round draw to complement its natural scenery and existing offerings, which already include zip lining, and cabin rentals.
No opening date has been announced for the Hocking Hills Mountain Coaster. More details will be shared as the project moves closer to completion.
