Powder Mountain is making progress on one of its biggest terrain expansions in years. They recently showed off the massive operation required to install a 31,000-pound haul rope on its upcoming DMI Lift.
The haul rope is a critical component of the new chairlift, which is expected to begin operating during the 2026-2027 ski season. The installation offers a look at the serious engineering and heavy lifting required to bring the new lift to life ahead of its anticipated debut.
New Lift Will Unlock More Than 1,000 Acres
The DMI Lift will open up more than 1,000 acres of advanced and expert terrain in Powder Mountain’s Wolf Creek Canyon zone. According to the resort’s official expansion website, the area features approximately 2,200 feet of vertical drop, with steep lines, open glades, and chutes suited to experienced skiers and snowboarders.
DMI, short for Don’t Mention It, has historically been accessible through guided backcountry tours. The new lift will make the terrain accessible through the resort’s regular lift system, dramatically changing how guests can explore the zone. The new chairlift one of the steepest lifts constructed by manufacturer Skytrac, making it clear just how challenging the terrain is that it will serve.
Part Of A Larger Resort Expansion
The DMI project is one piece of Powder Mountain’s broader investment in its public ski area. The resort is also replacing its existing Sundown Lift with a new high-speed quad called Sundown Express, which is expected to operate during the 2026-2027 season.
Powder Mountain is also planning a new 15,000-square-foot Sundown Lodge, which will house ski and ride school facilities, equipment rentals, food and beverage services, lockers, and guest services. That project is expected to open for the 2027-2028 season.
For the upcoming winter, the DMI Lift is one of the most significant developments on the mountain if not in the entire country. Once operational, it will provide access to a substantial stretch of steep Utah terrain that previously required a guided backcountry experience.
