Gray Wolf Spotted @ Sequoia National Park
Gray Wolf Spotted @ Sequoia National Park

Amazing news from the California Wolf Foundation who just reported the first wild wolf to enter Sequoia National Park in more than 100 years. The wolf, identified as BEY03F, is equipped with a tracking collar and was recently located entering the eastern border of Sequoia National Park near Mount Pickering.

“Dispersing gray wolf BEY03F has made yet another historic move—this time entering Sequoia National Park, the first wolf known to step paw there in over 100 years! This remarkable journey to the remote backcountry of Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Parks highlights the incredible distances wolves can travel as they reclaim parts of their historic range in California. Each step tells a bigger story about resilience, connectivity, and the future of wolves in our state.” -California Wolf Foundation

This same wolf was also the first to enter Los Angeles County in more than 100 years.

BEY03F is a female wolf born in 2023 into the Beyem Seyo pack. Wolves from Oregon began reentering California in 2011 after the native population was extirpated in the 1920s.

The wolves returned to California on their own volition by dispersal of individuals from source populations in other states. They were not purposefully reintroduced into the state.

The gray wolf (Canis lupus) is a recovering endangered species protected under the California Endangered Species Acts (CESA) and U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service Federal Endangered Species Act.
