A cable car malfunction at Macugnaga Ski Resort in northern Italy’s Piedmont region injured six people and left around 100 passengers stranded on Tuesday, December 30th. EuroNews reports two cabins collided with the cable car’s upper and lower stations near the village of Macugnaga.
The incident happened at approximately 11:25am. The slopes under the Monte Moro cable car were closed off as members from The Civil Alpine Rescue Service, police and firefighters arrived on the scene and began evacuating stranded guests. The complex evacuation lasted around 5 hours.
Macugnaga Trasporti e Servizi’s managing director of lift operations, Filippo Besozzi, said one of the cable car cabins failed to slow down and hit a station barrier.
“Fortunately there are no serious injuries, nobody’s life is in danger. There is a 59-year-old man who has a wound on his arm. Others have had minor grazes.“ -Filippo Besozzi
The Monte Moro cable car was originally built in 1962 and underwent a โฌ2 million overhaul in 2023. Authorities have launched an investigation into the cause of the crash.
