There been a lot of chatter about public lands in America recently including the massive blowback after Utah Senator Mike Lee tried to include public land sales in HR-1 but its worth refreshing out memory about what exactly defines public lands:

“Public lands in America are areas of land and water owned collectively by the U.S. public and managed by government agencies at the federal, state, and local levels. This includes vast federal lands managed by agencies like the National Park Service and Bureau of Land Management, as well as state and local parks. Public lands are managed for a variety of uses, such as recreation, resource extraction, conservation, and scientific research.”

Simple enough but it gets a bit tricky when public lands are fully surrounded by private land making them illegal to access without trespassing except if you have a helicopter handy. Skier Griffin Post decided to make a ski film exploring the subject to showcase some of the best mountains that lie inside the estimated 16 million acres of public land in the U.S. that are completely inaccessible because they are surrounded by private land. Griffin stuck to the Montana’s Crazy Mountains but there are plenty more locked behind the invisible moats of private lands.

The film is called “Inaccessible” and we think Post’s project is a badass statement on the current state of affairs. It debuts at the the Boulder Theater on December 9th. If you are in the area, we highly recommend you join in support.

Film Debut Details:

Join us for the premiere of “Inaccessible,” a powerful new film that inspires, educates, and mobilizes a movement for our public lands.

In this one-of-a-kind story, ski film veteran Griffin Post joins fellow athletes Eric Jackson and Emilé Zynobia to look beyond the steepest lines and biggest peaks to find public land on an expedition into a landscape divided. “Inaccessible” reveals landlocked boundaries that partition millions of acres of public land from the public, and follows a search for something deeper than snow. A ski film that tackles an issue commonly known to hunters, this film reveals that landlocked land is bigger than any single boundary line or pursuit.

Following the screening, a live panel discussion will feature athletes from the film, Ryan “Cal” Callaghan from MeatEater, and Jim Petterson from the Trust for Public Land. The conversation will be moderated by Whitney Potter Schwartz from Outdoor Recreation Roundtable. Explore new products and enjoy giveaways from onX and film partners, including Smartwool, Decked, and Tin Cup. Don’t miss the kickoff event of the snow season!
