Idaho — While Anakin Skywalker may not like sand, it can be a nice alternative for skiers to get their adrenaline rush during the summertime.

Skiing on sand is possible in places across the American West, but one of the best places for newcomers is at Bruneau Dunes State Park. Located in Idaho, the state park is home to sand dunes that make for some great shredding. Sandboard rentals are available for those who don’t have a setup.

Earlier this summer, Idaho News 6 shared what skiing is like at Bruneau Dunes. They followed along with Cameron Cox, who loves to shred the sand, even if it gets anywhere. I swear that’s the last Star Wars reference in this article. They discuss the key differences between skiing on sand and snow, and why he prefers to use old gear rather than the equipment typically seen on the mountain.

Established in 1967, Bruneau Dunes State Park is known for having the largest sand dune in North America. This is the dune that is 470 feet above the rest of the desert, making it a popular spot for hikers and skiers. Turning and stopping isn’t as easy, but it’s a memorable experience for those who love an adrenaline rush. Plus, wiping out isn’t as brutal as it can be while skiing on the snow.
