Girdwood, Alaska — During the summertime, Alyeska Resort changes from a snowy destination for skiers to a popular spot for mountain bikers and hikers. Bikers have a wide variety of terrain to check out thanks to operations from the Ted’s Express and Bear Cub Quad chairlifts.
While this gives them great variety, bikers have criticized operations there in recent years for the decision to keep the Glacier Bowl Express closed to riders. This decision is partially due to snowfall at upper elevations, making maintaining and opening it challenging. However, this area is set to open for several days this month.
In August, Alyeska announced it will reopen the Glacier Bowl Express (Chair 6) for two weekends of riding. They’ll run the chair for bikers on September 5, 6, 12, and 13th from 12 p.m. to 6 p.m. This will bring in a wide variety of terrain, including a reshaped Chips and Salsa jump line.
Guests were thrilled by the announcement and praised management for recent changes that reward frequent visitors. So if you’re looking to support bringing Chair 6 bike operations, this or next weekend is a good time to visit.
Meanwhile, preparations are underway for the 2026-27 ski season. Alyeska’s projected opening date is November 28th.
