Australia — Last week, Thredbo Resort made headlines after reportedly being put up for sale. What was also surprising was how its parent company, EVT, had drastically reduced its value. The reasoning is new infrastructure, partly because of upcoming changes.
The Snowy Mountains Magazine was the first to report that Thredbo Resort is planning to open a new chairlift in 2028. The Gunbarrel chairlift, which was installed back in 1988, will be removed following the 2027 ski season. The detachable high-speed quad chairlift will be replaced with a Doppelmayr detachable high-speed six-pack chairlift. It will have a similar alignment as its predecessor. It will be similar to the Mt. Perisher 6 chairlift, which was recently installed at Perisher.
The plan is to install it during the 2027-28 offseason, and open it during the 2028 ski season. After that, the other lift replacement priorities appear to be Kosciuszko Express, then Snowgums.
Snowmaking is another noted priority. Last offseason, the resort added an all-weather snowmaking machine on Friday Flat, the beginner area around the Gunbarrel chairlift. This helped with early opening. A second system will be installed this summer, which will lead to further coverage in the area. This second unit reportedly has double the capacity of the current system.

With the biggest vertical drop at a ski resort in Australia, Thredbo Resort is known for its terrain variety.
According to Mountainwatch, the ski resort features 480 hectares (1,186 acres) of skiable terrain, 14 lifts, and a vertical drop of 672 meters (over 2,200 feet). In terms of its lifts, Thredbo has the only gondola at a ski resort in Australia. With the Karel’s T-Bar, it also had the highest lift point in the country before Perisher took the crown in 2025. The resort is well regarded, with the World Ski Awards naming it the country’s best ski resort for nine consecutive years. During the offseason, Thredbo offers mountain biking, hiking, scenic lift rides, disc golf, a mountain coaster, and more.
Thredbo Resort remains open but is dealing with a melting snowpack. Summer operations typically begin in November.
