Treble Cone Ski Area in New Zealand will remain closed on Saturday, August 29th, as crews continue working to address avalanche hazards and landslides caused by a major storm.
The ski area was also closed Friday, August 28th, after heavy rain fell across the mountain on top of an already substantial snowpack. The combination has created a complex avalanche situation that requires extensive work before the mountain can safely reopen.
Heavy Rain Creates Avalanche Concerns
Treble Cone patrol teams spent Friday conducting avalanche control work, including helicopter operations, as they assessed and managed hazards across the mountain.
The unusual combination of heavy rain and a deep snowpack can create unstable conditions across steep terrain. With avalanche risk remaining significant, patrol will continue control efforts on Saturday while crews work toward making the ski area safe for visitors.
Landslides Block Access Road
Avalanche danger is not the only issue facing Treble Cone. Several large landslides have blocked the access road to the ski area, creating another major obstacle for reopening.
Access to the mountain has been challenging following the storm. Crews will need additional time to safely clear the road while patrol continues addressing avalanche hazards. The combination of road closures and unstable snow means Treble Cone cannot just resume operations once the weather improves. Both the mountain and access route must be assessed and made safe before guests can return.
Treble Cone Reopening Remains Uncertain
Treble Cone has not provided a specific reopening date, saying it will take some time to clear the road and manage the avalanche risk. They hope to welcome guests back as soon as conditions allow and will provide further updates as work continues.
