Tyrol Basin may not be one of Wisconsin’s biggest or most famous ski areas, but SRG Skiing makes a compelling case for why the Mount Horeb resort deserves more attention. Located roughly 20 miles west of Madison, Tyrol Basin has become a popular destination for local skiers and University of Wisconsin students looking for convenient access to the slopes.
A Convenient Wisconsin Ski Area
Tyrol Basin is about a 35 minute drive from the University of Wisconsin Madison campus, making it an easy option for a quick day of skiing. Milwaukee is roughly two hours away, while Chicago can be reached in about three hours.
The resort has only around 450 feet of vertical, meaning skiers should not expect long runs or massive alpine terrain. Instead, Tyrol Basin focuses on approachable skiing, freestyle terrain and a surprisingly diverse collection of runs for a small Midwest hill.
Terrain For Beginners And Experts
Tyrol Basin offers dedicated beginner terrain served by magic carpets, while three triple chairs provide access to the majority of the mountain. Lift A is particularly focused on terrain parks, including the Barnyard area, which features substantial rails and other freestyle features.
More advanced skiers will find the most challenging terrain around Lift C. Double Diamond provides a short but steep pitch, while the surrounding trees contain drops, chutes and other technical features that can offer a considerably more demanding experience than the resort’s size might suggest.
Snow coverage can be an issue in the trees, however, and SRG Skiing notes that some areas can become difficult to ski safely when conditions deteriorate.
Night Skiing Adds To The Appeal
Like many Midwest ski areas, Tyrol Basin offers night skiing across the entire resort. Most trails are well lit, although some terrain around Lift C has more limited visibility. The combination of easy access, terrain parks, beginner-friendly slopes and pockets of advanced terrain makes Tyrol Basin an interesting option for Wisconsin skiers.
Whether it is the best ski resort in Wisconsin is subjective, but for Madison-area skiers looking for a convenient hill with more variety than its size suggests, Tyrol Basin is certainly a strong choice.
