Integrated Visitor Information (IVI) Project @ Yosemite National Park

Yosemite National Park is getting a high-tech overhaul designed to take the guesswork out of trip planning.

Thanks to a new Conceptual Grant from the National Park Foundation (supported by the Yosemite Conservancy) park officials are launching the Integrated Visitor Information (IVI) Project. The initiative aims to harness artificial intelligence, smart devices, and real-time data sensors to give travelers instant updates before and during their visit.

“This will allow us to explore new and innovative ways to communicate with visitors across multiple platforms to provide automatic updates.” Yosemite National Park

What’s Changing for Visitors?

Navigating Yosemite’s winding roads and crowded parking lots can be challenging, especially during peak season. The IVI Project plans to connect existing park communication channels with new technology to stream live, automated updates directly to visitors.

Here is what the tech integration aims to deliver:

  • Real-Time Parking Availability: Track open spots before driving into crowded valley lots.
  • Live Road & Traffic Status: Receive instant alerts on closures, delays, or winter chain requirements.
  • Accurate Wait Times: Check entrance gate queues and visitor center wait times in real time.
  • Multi-Platform Sync: Updates will automatically sync across the park’s official website, mobile apps, digital road signs, dynamic maps, and visitor center displays.

Testing the Future of Park Tech

The conceptual grant acts as an experimental green light. It allows park managers to test various sensors, smart devices, and AI-driven automation systems directly in the field to determine which tools provide the most reliable, practical information.

By giving travelers live visibility into park conditions, Yosemite hopes to reduce traffic congestion, streamline entry, and help millions of annual guests navigate one of America’s most iconic natural landscapes more confidently and efficiently.
