A historic log cabin burnt down on the backside of Aspen Mountain on Saturday, May 30th, after a structure fire engulfed the entire building.

According to the Aspen Fire Department, the Aspen Fire Protection District was dispatched to the fire on Richmond Ridge Road at around 10:27am. Aspen Fire reported no injuries and the fire was contained by 12:33pm. Flames showed on the northwest side of the 400-square-foot log cabin, frequently called “Grant’s Cabin”, and those on the Aspen Mountain Sundeck could see the fire prior to the arrival of emergency personnel.

More than 30 emergency responders responded to the incident, including those from spen Fire Protection District, Roaring Fork Fire Rescue, Aspen Ambulance District, Pitkin County Sheriff’s Office, Aspen Skiing Company, and the Bureau of Land Management. The fire had fully involved the cabin by their arrival.

Crews initiated a coordinated response focused on containing the structure fire and preventing it from spreading into the surrounding wildlife fuels. Increasing winds forced crews to work primarily on protecting nearby vegetation and mitigating the wildland fire risk.

Aspen Fire Protection District and partner agencies are continuing to monitor the area with the Pano AI wildfire detection camera network. Crews remained on site overnight to monitor the conditions and keep the fire from spreading into the surrounding vegetation.

Officials continue to investigate the fire and will release additional information as it becomes available. According to Aspen Trail Finder, Grant Timroth built Grant’s Cabin in 1988 on Richmond Ridge, located on the backside of Aspen Mountain.
