Quesnel, British Columbia — A major terrain expansion debuted last winter at a modestly sized British Columbia ski area.
Last winter, Troll Resort opened the first phase of the Pinegrove Expansion. This multi-decade project took lots of planning, with construction occurring over the past few years. The area relies on natural snow, which led to limited openings last season.
Troll Resort GM Scott Zacharias provided an update on the expansion last week. One of the trails that briefly debuted this past winter, North Face, has seen more work done to make it more skiable. Meanwhile, work is underway on clearing a new beginner trail that will hopefully debut next winter. The video features Scott’s classic dry and witty humor, including a reference to a sidewalk in town that’s not close to being completed.
About The Expansion
Back in January, Troll Resort opened its first runs as part of the Pinegrove expansion. This new terrain zone is serviced by a T-Bar, which is one of the longest on the continent. The Black T-Bar has a 100-meter section with a 49.4% grade near the beginning, but riders barely notice the steepness thanks to the methodical layout and engineering.
The terrain pod is full of steep terrain but also features meandering trails for less experienced riders. This past winter saw the opening of four new trails in this terrain pod. The first two trails opened up in January: Lars’ Legacy (black) and Longest Way Down (green). After an extended closure due to a low snowpack, they were briefly able to reopen these trails. They also opened two more trails, North Face and Best Day Ever, both of which are black diamonds, during this second opening.
The plan is to open 1-2 new runs each season. While other trails have been cut, they are closed due to there being various uncleared hazards. This terrain pod will eventually be home to over 30 trails and glades.
