Preparing your ski gear for summer storage.
Preparing your ski gear for summer storage.

It’s really easy to simply throw all of your ski gear into the closet now that the season is over, but there are a handful of things you can do this spring to store your gear to help it last longer and feel better. Ski Utah provided a handful of tips to make sure your gear is put away right and to make it a bit easier on yourself when next season rolls around.

The first tip, getting a storage wax, can be a bit of a controversial topic depending on who you ask. You definitely don’t NEED a storage wax, but getting one will protect the base of your skis and help them last longer. The video mentions a specific type of wax that works best for storage, but really most ski wax will do just fine. If you’re doing it yourself, just don’t scrape the wax off after ironing it on.

It can also be very tempting to hang up your ski clothing and forget about it for the summer, but that’s how you wind up with smelly gear on next season’s opening day. Cleaning the gear now will ensure your waterproofing is working well and will prevent a stinky closet. Any technical gear likely needs a tech wash or waterproof wash, so make sure you check your clothing’s specifications before throwing it in the laundry.

Hats and gaiters are also very easy to forget about but often wind up smelling the worst, so toss those in the laundry before you tuck them away in a drawer or cabinet. Go through any backpacks to remove any trash or hidden snacks, and take the batteries out of your avalanche beacon. Now is a great time for re-waterproofing any gear that needs it like your favorite leather gloves.

If you just take a handful of hours this weekend to get all this stuff done now, I promise you’ll be thanking yourself come opening day 2026.
