On Monday, May 4th, two hikers sustained injuries in a bear attack on the Mystic Falls Trail near Old Faithful in Yellowstone National Park. In response, Montana Fish, Wildlife, and Parks officials are reminding outdoor enthusiasts to practice bear safety, including carrying bear spray and knowing how to use it.

According to local Montana news KTVQ, bear management specialist Daniel McHugh pointed out that sightings are frequent throughout the state’s bear mating season from May through July. Both black and grizzly bears are very commonly spotted as they emerge from their dens.

The organization encourages hikers to travel in groups and make plenty of noise while on the trails. Proper foot storage is also critical to those living or recreating in bear country. Food, trash, or other attractants left out around your home or campsite really heighten your risk of a dangerous encounter.

How to use bear spray

Additionally, Montana Fish, Wildlife, and Parks emphasized the importance of carrying bear spray and knowing how to deploy it quickly. The spray should be kept in a holster or pocket where it can be reached in just two or three seconds. Expiration dates should be checked, and while they aren’t necessarily hard dates, the cans should be replaced.

The Yellowstone Wildlife Sanctuary offers classes for those looking to learn and prepare for encounters. There, instructors will show you how to use your spray before sending you on your way to enjoy the stunning Montana scenery.
