A Rhode Island man had to be rescued from Iron Mountain in Jackson, New Hampshire, on April 24th after falling from a fire tower at the summit and fracturing his ankle.

Peter Frayley, 60, of Charlestown, Rhode Island, was hiking with his wife when he climbed up the fire tower after reaching the summit. A loose board gave way, sending him to the platform below and leaving him unable to walk. A call to 911 came in at 11:07 am.

New Hampshire Fish and Game responded alongside members of Lakes Region Search and Rescue and Androscoggin Valley Search and Rescue. Rescuers reached Frayley at 1:40pm, stabilized him, and placed him in a rescue litter. He was carried down the trail and arrived at the trailhead parking area at 3:45pm before being transported to Memorial Hospital in North Conway for evaluation and treatment.

New Hampshire Fish and Game encourages outdoor enthusiasts to purchase a Hike Safe card at wildnh.com/safe to support Fish and Game search and rescue operations and helps offset the cost of incidents like this one. Safe hiking tips and a gear checklist are available at hikesafe.com.
