We’re getting closer and closer to the Milano Cortana 2026 Winter Olympics, and in the run up to the international event the Olympic channel is taking a look at the history of winter sports in the region. Recently they took a look at Italy’s first ski lift, the Col Alto chairlift in Corvara,ย Alta Badia.

This lift, created by Italian transport pioneer Erich Kostner, opened in 1947. It was built from the scraps of WWII, laying the foundations of the Dolomite ski culture that survives and thrives today. That original lift is gone, but the modern lift system of Alta Badia operates as an aerial subway system above the resort.
