The Colorado Department of Transportation has completed the largest wildlife overpass in North America, sitting over I-25 near Larkspur. The I-25 Greenland overpass allows elk, pronghorn, mule deer, black bears, mountain lions, and other animals to safely cross a six lane section of the interstate.

Impressively, construction on the project was completed in less that a year, ahead of schedule and on-budget. The overpass has been covered with dirt and vegetation to mimic the natural habitat and encourage use by wildlife.

The Colorado Department of Transportation has completed the I-25 Greenland wildlife overpass near Larkspur, now the largest wildlife overpass in North America. The structure allows elk, pronghorn, mule deer, black bears, mountain lions, and many other species to safely cross six lanes of interstate traffic. Construction was finished in less than a year, ahead of schedule and on budget, and the overpass has been covered with dirt and vegetation to resemble natural habitat and encourage wildlife use.

โ€œColorado is leading the way in reducing wildlife-vehicle collisions, and improving safety for both our motorists and wildlife. The I-25 Greenland wildlife overpass is a momentous feat, in our continued work to expand safe transportation options for both humans and wildlife, protecting critical habitat, and our amazing outdoor spaces for generations to come.โ€ย – Colorado Governor Jared Polis.ย

The project completes a broader system of underpasses, fencing, and crossings developed as part of the I-25 South Gap project, meant to improve 18 miles of highway from Castle Rock to Monument. Before these improvements, the region saw an average of one wildlife-vehicle collision per day during the peak migration sessions. While underpasses are already being used by many animals, the Greenland overpass was specifically made to meet the needs of elk and pronghorn who prefer wide, open crossing structures.
