Red Bull Rampage is easily one of the wildest extreme sports events of the year, every year. The incredible event, set to run between October 16th and 18th of this year, tasks athletes with building their own competition routes on the desert slopes of Virgin, Utah. They’re not building these courses alone, of course.
Each rider is allowed to work with two other people to build their routes down the mountain. Power tools and external materials are banned, with sand bags as the only exception. Typically teams spend three days just digging and four days with riders testing their jumps and lines. Sometimes athletes will share lines, pooling resources to make epic routes. Other times they’ll stick to themselves, setting the goal of getting everything done without help.
Mountain biker Olly Wilkins has been attending Red Bull Rampage for 8 or 9 years, not necessarily competing, but helping his friends to build these incredible routes. In a recent interview with Just Ride by Red Bull, he discussed the absolute madness that comes with route building at the legendary event.
Both the men’s and women’s final days for Red Bull Rampage will be broadcast on Red Bull TV and ESPN+. The women’s Rampage takes place on Thursday, October 16th. The men’s is set to take place on Saturday, October 18th. Make sure to tune in next week/weekend so you don’t miss all of the excitement.
