Skysurfer grinds the San Francisco Bay Bridge
Skysurfer grinds the San Francisco Bay Bridge

Cheers to Sean MacCormac just fulfilled a lifelong dream of soaring above the iconic San Francisco skyline and executing the world’s first skysurf boardslide on a cable bridge.

The stunt was supported by the partnership between Prada Linea Rossa and Red Bull who funded months of training for MacCormac and provided him with a specially engineered board complete with a honeycomb core, carbon fiber layers, and a high-density polyethylene base.

The Red Bull aerial athlete swooped over the 1,400 feet span of the San Francisco Bay Bridge and touched down for his world’s first grind and then executed a picture perfect banking spiral turn before landing smoothly on a floating platform below.

Apologies if this stunt caused you any delay in your commute as the bridge was temporarily shutdown but whatever inconvenience you may have experienced you have to admit this is pretty cool:

Prada Statement:

Fulfilling this lifelong dream required months of training and the development of cutting-edge technical equipment. MacCormac jumped from a helicopter above the bay in California strapped to an exclusive high-tech board, created as a collaboration between Prada Linea Rossa and the Luna Rossa team. Following a long skysurfing descent, he reached the bridge’s cables, sliding along them for several seconds before spiral turning and landing on a floating platform positioned below the structure.

The board boasts a special construction to ensure it could cope with the specific demands of this highly complex maneuver. A honeycomb core was combined with layers of carbon fiber to provide maximum reactivity and control during the flight stage. A high-density yet lightweight polyethylene base was chosen to withstand the abrasion caused from contact with the bridge’s metal cables. For a more durable and seamless finish, the surface does not include any adhesive material and instead features painted graphic designs.

The fine-tuning of every detail in the design process drew on the engineering expertise that the Luna Rossa team has developed throughout its America’s Cup competitions, proving that even the most extreme challenges are overcomable through a combination of research, function, and design. Additionally, Prada Linea Rossa provided high-performance garments and accessories to support MacCormac during his challenge, blending textile innovation with practical, cutting-edge aerodynamic design.

This project is the latest chapter in the partnership between Prada Linea Rossa and Red Bull for the promotion of multiple events and sporting initiatives in support of those daring to push their own limits.
