At least eight people were injured in a chairlift collapse at Russian resort area in the Nalchik municipal district in the foothills of the Caucasus Mountains.
Russia’s Health Ministry reports the injuries sustained in the August 8th collapse were “light or moderate.” 21 people were on the chairlift when it collapsed and required emergency evacuation by Elbrus alpine Search & Rescue.
Several of the people were sent plunging into 22-foot-deep waters of Lake Trek and others landed on the rocky ground below the chairlift. Security footage of the incident has surfaced and shows the exact moment of the disaster:
An investigation has been launched by Russian authorities as to the exact cause of the collapse but emergency responders noted the wear and tear of the cables which was originally installed in 1968. We will be sure to update this story as more information becomes available.
