Just like their human counterparts, juvenile grizzly bears can be persistent and demanding when they want to nurse. Instead of crying, bear cubs use a vocalization that can sound threatening to the untrained ear but it’s just their way of letting their mother know they are hungry.
Grizzly bear milk is exceptionally rich in nutrients and has a high fat content measured around 25% percent. In the absence of eating and drinking, mother grizzly bears can actually produce milk while hibernating which is a remarkable physiological feat.
This cub in Chinitna Bay, Alaska was exceptionally loud in its pleas to nurse but the momma bear didn’t feel comfortable feeding in such an exposed area and encouraged the juvenile to follow her to a more protected area to nurse.
