On May 31, Colorado Parks and Wildlife received a mortality alert for male gray wolf 2507 in northwest Colorado.

Return of the Wolves to Colorado

As gray wolves are federally listed under the Endangered Species Act, the death is being investigated by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. A final determination on the cause of death will be made once the investigation is complete including the necropsy. No other details on the death are currently available.

Colorado Parks and Wildlife monitors four potential dens with the likelihood of an unknown number of new pups born this year. The organization is currently working on plans for translocation efforts this coming year to allow the state’s wolf population to continue to grow to a self-sustaining number.

Colorado Parks and Wildlife has been releasing wolves into the state for two years now, bringing in the animals with assistance from other state wildlife management agencies. The first release took place between December 18th and 21st, 2023, with wolves from Oregon. The second release occurred in 2025 with wolves from British Columbia.
