New Zealand —  It was looking so promising for Mt Hutt. After receiving a huge snowstorm in April, it seemed like they would be able to open early. Mount Hutt announced that they would be moving up their opening day by two weeks, with a projected opening of May 31st. It seemed like Hutt would have its first May opening since 2009.

Unfortunately, it was not meant to be. Mt Hutt announced this past weekend that warm weather has diminished their snowpack, and they’ll need cold weather and snow to get open.

The new goal is to open either on June 7th or 8th, which would be around one week earlier than their original scheduled opening date. If not, it’ll be their original opening date of June 13th.

A few ski fields in New Zealand will begin operations this weekend, just not for skiing. The first to open in New Zealand will likely be Whakapapa, which will have sightseeing, sledding, and two snow play areas opening on May 30th. While TÅ«roa Ski Area won’t be open for skiing just yet, they’ll have sightseeing and a snow play area open starting on May 31st.
