Colorado Parks and Wildlife (CPW) is warning residents and visitors of Colorado Springs to be aware of coyotes following two attacks on dogs that were on 6-foot leashes with their owners. One of the attacks occurred near Palmer Park and the other at Rockrimmon Open Space.

Be Coyote Wise

Coyotes often become aggressive toward perceived threats while new pups are being born, aiming to defend their young. Coyote pups are generally born around February and raised in dens through June.

CPW encourages residents to keep their pets leashed while on walks and indoors and night or inside fully enclosed kennels. Coyotes show signs of agression by raising hairs on the back of their neck, baring teeth, and growling.

If you encounter a coyote, give it plenty of space. If it’s displaying signs of aggression, do not run or turn your back. Get as large and loud as possible, shouting in a loud authoritative voice. Clap your hands, wave your arms, and throw objects at the animal. If it does not leave the area, back away slowly while continuing to face towards it. Report any coyotes that display aggressive behavior towards people to Colorado Parks and Wildlife.
