Surfing an Alaskan Tidal Bore.
Surfing an Alaskan Tidal Bore.

When most of us think of extreme sports in Alaska, we think of epic ski and snowboard runs with massive mountains and deep snow. Surfing doesn’t usually come to mind, but where there’s a wave, there’s somebody who’ll try to surf it.

Tidal bores occur in places where an incoming high tide enters a shallow, sloping estuary, river, or harbor. As the tide flows toward land, a rapidly advancing wall of water suddenly raises the water level. These waves can travel great distances up rivers, creating 20+ minute rides for surfers able to hop on. Professional surfer Jamie O’Brien headed back to Alaska to take advantage of these incredibly long waves.
