Tragic news out of Colorado where an individual was found deceased in Steamboat Lake State Park on Saturday, May 3, after they’d fallen into the water without a personal floatation device (PFD).
According to Colorado Parks and Wildlife, park rangers responded to a call for an overturned watercraft in the water around 3pm. The craft was a small U-shaped inflatable float tube often called a “bellyboat” that’s frequently used for fishing. The craft was turned upside down with no signs on anyone nearby.
Upon further investigation, park rangers found a person submerged underwater without a personal flotation device secured to the craft with a safety strap. The victim was removed from the water before being pronounced dead of the scene.
“The incident yesterday is tragic, and we extend our deepest sympathies to the victim’s family and friends. We continue to urge everyone to pay close attention to weather conditions and to wear a PFD while recreating on the water.” – David Goff, Park Ranger at Steamboat Lake State Park.
Spring and early summer water conditions can be frigid with rapidly changing weather conditions creating further hazards. Entering cold water can hinder a person’s ability to swim if they experience cold water shock, risking hypothermia. Colorado Parks and Wildlife reminds the public to wear a PFD even when not required.
“The investigation is still ongoing. Witnesses reported the victim was fishing near the Rainbow Ridge day-use area on the west side of the park. Steady winds with strong gusts were reported at the time of the incident.” – CPW
