Red Bull Cerro Abajo, the world’s largest urban downhill race, returned to Valparaíso, Chile for the 21st time in March and the action was intense. The format is simple, the rider with the fastest descent wins. The course is a chaotic mixture of urban features including staircases, tight corners and even a small section that runs through a residence.
The following footage is Felipe Agurto’s silver medal performance as he expertly navigates this UNESCO World Heritage Site with speeds approaching 25mph. A combination of lightning fast reflexes, technical precision and aggression are required to descend these twisting corridors in the fastest time possible and its truly wild to world’s best riders trying to shave fractions of a second to take the top podium spot.
Red Bull Cerro Abajo Format & Rules:
The race is a time trial format, meaning the rider with the fastest descent wins. The course is extremely fast, chaotic and demanding, featuring stairs, wallrides, tight corners, and massive drops. The riders need razor-sharp reflexes, plenty of stamina to handle the brutal course, and an in-built confidence to navigate through the track at speeds of up to 40km/h. It’s all about balancing aggression with precision – too slow, and they lose time; too reckless, and they might crash out.
