A 12-year-old cat managed to survive a near 400-foot fall off a cliff in Bryce Canyon National Park that left two hikers dead.
According to KUTV, the 12-year-old tabby named Mirage was found next to the bodies of Matthew Nannen and Bailee Crane. The cat appeared to be in relatively good condition despite the fall and was the sole survivor.
Mirage was taken to Pawz Dogs boarding facility in Panguitch on April 29 before Best Friends Animal Society was contacted by the Garfield County Sheriff’s Office the next day. The society picked up the cat and brought Mirage to their sanctuary nearly 70 miles away in Kanab.
Sanctuary staff said Mirage was sore and matted but friendly, alert, and eating and drinking on her own. While X-rays are still pending to determine if she suffered any internal injuries, her bloodwork did come back normal.
Matthew Nannen and Bailee Crane fell about 380 feet from Inspiration Point sometime between Monday evening and Tuesday morning of this past week. Their bodies were discovered by a tourist on Tuesday. They had apparently climbed over a protective fence installed to stop tourists from going over the edge.
